In a pilot RCT with 82 adolescents aged 13-18, a 21-day total smartphone and social media detox (with or without a basic 'brick' phone) led to tentative improvements in sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and working memory compared to controls. However, these improvements were not sustained at a 2-month follow-up. Retention was high with 13% attrition, and 83% of participants endorsed the need for government action on this issue.
