A 4-week bedtime audio intervention combining binaural beats with pure music reduces perceived stress in college students with poor sleep quality
In a three-group randomized controlled trial of 66 college students with poor sleep quality (PSQI > 7), a 30-minute audio intervention combining binaural beats with pure music at bedtime for 4 weeks (5 nights/week) significantly reduced perceived stress as measured by the PSS, with significant time, group, and time-by-group interaction effects (p < 0.05). The binaural beats + pure music group was more effective at reducing stress than pink noise + pure music or control. However, no significant group differences were found in morning salivary cortisol levels, which showed only a main effect of time.

Mechanism Graph
Limitations
- โ Cortisol measured at a single daily time point (30 min after awakening) is insufficient to infer short-term modulation of HPA axis activity
- โ Small sample size (n=66) limits generalizability
- โ No blinding of participants to intervention groups
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between pink noise and binaural beats in this study?โผ
Both were combined with pure music, but the binaural beats + pure music group was more effective at reducing perceived stress than the pink noise + pure music group.
How long did the intervention last each night?โผ
The audio intervention lasted 30 minutes at bedtime.
Did the intervention affect cortisol levels?โผ
No significant group differences were found in morning salivary cortisol; only a significant main effect of time was observed.
Who was eligible for this study?โผ
College students with poor sleep quality, defined as a PSQI score greater than 7.
