Adherence to the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines is associated with lower all-cause mortality in adults with chronic kidney disease.
Among 5578 adults with CKD, meeting the MVPA or sedentary behavior recommendations individually was associated with lower all-cause mortality (MVPA: HR=0.48; SB: HR=0.75), while sleep alone was not significant. Combined adherence to all three components showed a strong protective effect (HR=0.45), particularly in adults aged โฅ65 years.

Limitations
- โ Self-reported measures of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep time may introduce recall bias
- โ Observational study design cannot establish causality
- โ Generalizability may be limited to the U.S. population with CKD
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines?โผ
They are integrated recommendations for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep time across a 24-hour period.
Did meeting the sleep recommendation alone reduce mortality in CKD patients?โผ
No, meeting the sleep recommendation alone was not significantly associated with lower all-cause mortality.
Was the survival benefit stronger in older adults?โผ
Yes, the association was more pronounced in participants aged 65 years and older, while it was weaker and generally not significant in those under 65.
How many participants were in this study?โผ
The study analyzed 5578 adults with chronic kidney disease from NHANES 1999-2018.
