An evening activity breaks intervention increases activity breaks and improves sleep quality in free-living adults

This pilot study tested a theory-informed intervention to increase evening activity breaks in free-living adults. Participants self-reported completing 3.6 activity breaks per evening, and there was a small reduction in sleep disturbances (PSQI score change -0.35, 95% CI -0.6 to -0.1), while objective measures of sedentary time, sleep, physical activity, and glycaemic outcomes showed little change.

Gale JT, Hargreaves EA, Haszard JJ, Peddie MC ยท Diabetes, obesity & metabolism (2026)

Participants: N/A
Duration: 4 weeks (2-week intervention + 2-week follow-up)
Intervention: A 2-week intervention using behavior change techniques and a mobile app to support 2-3 minute activity breaks every 30 minutes during prolonged evening sitting
Outcome: Number of activity breaks, glycaemic control, 24-h movement patterns, blood pressure, self-reported sleep (PSQI), and capability, opportunity, motivation to interrupt sitting
Effect Size: Sleep disturbances reduction: -0.35 (95% CI -0.6 to -0.1)
Population: 20 free-living adults (mean age 34 ยฑ 12 years, 18 female)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an evening activity breaks intervention?โ–ผ

It is an intervention that encourages people to take short 2-3 minute activity breaks every 30 minutes during prolonged sitting in the evening, using behavior change techniques and a mobile app.

Does interrupting evening sitting improve sleep?โ–ผ

The study found a small improvement in sleep quality, specifically a reduction in sleep disturbances as measured by the PSQI, but no significant changes in objective sleep measures.

How many activity breaks did participants perform?โ–ผ

On average, participants self-reported completing 3.6 activity breaks per evening during the intervention period.

Is this intervention effective for improving glucose and blood pressure?โ–ผ

The study found little change in glycaemic outcomes and blood pressure, suggesting that the intervention may not be sufficient to improve these metabolic markers in the short term.
