Anticipatory financial strain is associated with sleep problems, partially mediated by loneliness

This longitudinal study found that worrying about future finances (anticipatory financial strain) was associated with higher loneliness and worse sleep quality and greater sleep disturbance in a large UK sample. Loneliness partially mediated the relationship between financial worry and these sleep outcomes. The study used fixed-effects regression models on 20,355 individuals over two waves (2018-2020 and 2021-2023).

observational

Chai L, Ding X ยท International journal for equity in health (2026)

Participants: N/A
Duration: Approximately 3-5 years (Waves 10 and 13, 2018-2020 to 2021-2023)
Intervention: Anticipatory financial strain (worrying about being worse off financially in the future vs. same or better off)
Outcome: Sleep problems (sleep quality, sleep disturbance, sleep latency, daytime dysfunction, sleep medication use) measured via PSQI-derived indicators; loneliness
Effect Size: N/A (specific effect sizes not reported in abstract)
Population: UK adults from the United Kingdom Household Longitudinal Study (20,355 individuals; 40,710 person-wave observations)

Mechanism Graph

Anticipatory financial strain increases worry and psychological distress
โ†“
This distress leads to higher feelings of loneliness
โ†“
Loneliness disrupts sleep through hyperarousal or poor sleep hygiene
โ†“
Result: poorer sleep quality and greater sleep disturbance

Limitations

  • โš Abstract does not report specific effect sizes or confidence intervals
  • โš Relies on self-reported measures of sleep and financial worry, which may introduce bias
  • โš Only two waves of data limit ability to assess long-term causal pathways

Frequently Asked Questions

What is anticipatory financial strain?โ–ผ

It is worrying about one's future finances, specifically expecting to be worse off financially compared to being the same or better off.

Did the study find a link between financial worry and all sleep problems?โ–ผ

No, anticipatory financial strain was associated with poorer sleep quality and greater sleep disturbance, but not with sleep latency, daytime dysfunction, or sleep medication use.

Did gender affect the results?โ–ผ

Gender did not moderate the association between anticipatory financial strain and loneliness or most sleep dimensions, except for sleep medication use.

What is the main implication of this study?โ–ผ

Interventions that reduce financial uncertainty and strengthen social connections to reduce loneliness may help mitigate sleep problems in individuals experiencing economic worry.
