Cannabinoids reduce insomnia severity and improve sleep quality in adults with insomnia or poor sleep quality

This meta-analysis of 10 RCTs (2134 participants) found that cannabinoids significantly reduced insomnia severity (MD -3.73, 95% CI -5.04 to -2.42) and improved sleep quality (MD -3.94, 95% CI -5.47 to -2.40). Total sleep time increased by 33.99 minutes and sleep efficiency improved by 4.31%, with modest reductions in sleep onset latency. Adverse events were more frequent with cannabinoids (RR 3.96) but mostly mild and no serious harms were observed.

Mechanism Graph

Cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system, which regulates sleep-wake cycles
โ†“
They may modulate neurotransmitter release (e.g., GABA, serotonin) involved in sleep promotion
โ†“
Cannabinoids may reduce anxiety and pain, which are common contributors to insomnia

Result: Improved sleep quality and duration

Limitations

  • โš Limited number of RCTs (10) and potential heterogeneity in cannabinoid types and doses
  • โš Short-term follow-up; long-term efficacy and safety not established
  • โš Adverse events more frequent with cannabinoids, though mild
  • โš Optimal dosing and formulation not defined

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of cannabinoids were studied?โ–ผ

The abstract does not specify the exact types (e.g., THC, CBD, or combinations), but they were compared to placebo or melatonin.

How much did sleep improve?โ–ผ

Insomnia severity decreased by about 3.7 points on the ISI, sleep quality improved by about 3.9 points on the PSQI, and total sleep time increased by about 34 minutes.

Are there any side effects?โ–ผ

Yes, adverse events were more common with cannabinoids (risk ratio 3.96), mostly mild dizziness and dry mouth, with no serious harms reported.

Is this a recommendation to use cannabinoids for insomnia?โ–ผ

The authors suggest cannabinoids may be a potential alternative, but larger, long-term trials are needed to define optimal dosing and sustained efficacy.
