Chamomile and L-theanine beverage reduces menstrual pain and improves mood and sleep quality in young women with primary dysmenorrhea

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that daily consumption of a chamomile and L-theanine beverage (CTT) for five days around menstruation significantly reduced pain intensity by 57.17% (VAS) and 55.46% (NRS) compared to baseline. The intervention also significantly decreased severity of lower abdominal pain, back pain, depression, irritability, and daytime dysfunction by 31-56% in young women with primary dysmenorrhea.

Participants: N/A
Duration: 5 days per menstrual cycle (single cycle)
Intervention: Chamomile and L-theanine beverage (CTT) consumed daily for five consecutive days (starting two days before expected menstruation through first three days of menstruation)
Outcome: Menstrual pain intensity (VAS, NRS), menstrual symptoms (lower abdominal pain, back pain, loss of appetite, stomachache, body pain), mood (depression, irritability, complexation), and sleep quality (daytime dysfunction)
Effect Size: N/A (only percentage reductions reported)
Population: Young adult females with primary dysmenorrhea (n=30 total, 15 per group)
