ETAS reduces wake time after sleep onset in healthy adults dissatisfied with their sleep
In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study, 14-day intake of ETAS (300 mg/day as ETAS50) did not significantly change the proportion of N3 sleep but significantly reduced wake time after sleep onset (WASO) and total time of N1 sleep. It also improved AIS scores for total score, awakenings during the night, and daytime functioning. Post-hoc analysis showed significant reductions in WASO for those with high baseline WASO and improved sleep efficiency in those with low baseline sleep efficiency.

Limitations
- โ No significant effect on primary endpoint (N3 proportion)
- โ Post-hoc subgroup analyses were not pre-specified, increasing risk of type I error
- โ Short intervention period (14 days) and small sample size
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ETAS?โผ
ETAS is a standardized extract of Asparagus officinalis stem, studied for its potential to improve sleep quality.
Did ETAS improve deep sleep (N3)?โผ
No, the study found no statistically significant difference in the proportion of N3 sleep after 14 days of ETAS intake.
What sleep parameters did ETAS improve?โผ
ETAS significantly reduced wake time after sleep onset (WASO) and total time of N1 sleep, and improved AIS scores for total score, awakenings during the night, and daytime functioning.
Who might benefit most from ETAS?โผ
Post-hoc analysis suggests that individuals with high baseline WASO may see significant reductions in WASO, and those with low sleep efficiency may see improvements in sleep efficiency.
