Extreme heat exposure is associated with increased depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents

This observational study of Chinese adolescents found that exposure to extreme hot days (HTD) was significantly and positively associated with higher depressive symptom scores. The association remained robust across sensitivity analyses and was more pronounced among rural and male adolescents. Exploratory analyses suggested that shorter sleep duration, reduced physical exercise, and lower self-rated health may mediate this association.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main finding of this study?โ–ผ

Extreme heat exposure is significantly associated with increased depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents.

Which adolescents are most affected by extreme heat?โ–ผ

The association is more pronounced among rural and male adolescents.

What are the potential pathways linking extreme heat to depressive symptoms?โ–ผ

Shorter sleep duration, reduced physical exercise, and lower self-rated health may be behavioral and health-related pathways.

What data was used in this study?โ–ผ

Data from four waves of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) between 2016 and 2022, matched with extreme heat exposure data from the Chinese Climate Physical Risk Index.
