Family-centred nonpharmacological sleep interventions effectively address severe chronic sleep concerns in youth with neurodevelopmental disorders

A case report demonstrates that a family-centred, nonpharmacological sleep intervention focusing on behavioural, environmental, and circadian factors can effectively address sleep concerns, maintain improvements long term, and transform daytime functioning in youth with neurodevelopmental disorders. The intervention led to resolution of symptoms requiring medications prescribed for behaviour and medical conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main advantage of nonpharmacological sleep interventions over medications?โ–ผ

Nonpharmacological interventions lead to lasting improvements, whereas medications are sedating, do not promote normal sleep, and are frequently associated with unwanted side effects.

How long does it take for behavioural sleep interventions to work?โ–ผ

Behavioural interventions take longer to work compared to medications and require a degree of commitment from the family.

What types of factors are addressed in the family-centred sleep intervention?โ–ผ

The intervention focuses on behavioural, environmental, and circadian factors to address sleep concerns.

Can this intervention help reduce the need for other medications?โ–ผ

Yes, the case report showed resolution of symptoms requiring medications prescribed for behaviour and medical conditions after the sleep intervention.
