Healthy 24-hour movement behavior profiles (high MVPA, low SB, adequate sleep) are associated with better mental health in Chinese school students
This observational study identified distinct 24-hour movement behavior profiles among primary and secondary school students in China. Primary school students with profiles characterized by low sedentary behavior, high MVPA, and long sleep, or consistently high LPA, had significantly lower depression, fewer internalizing problems, and better working memory and inhibition control. Secondary school students with high MVPA and long sleep on weekdays and high MVPA on weekends had significantly lower depression and fewer internalizing problems compared to those with high SB, low LPA, and short sleep.

- โ Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference
- โ Sample limited to Chinese students, limiting generalizability
- โ Mental health outcomes were self-reported or measured via specific tests, not clinical diagnoses
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the key components of a healthy 24-hour movement behavior profile?โผ
The study suggests profiles with high moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), low sedentary behavior (SB), and adequate sleep duration are associated with better mental health. For primary school students, high light physical activity (LPA) also appears beneficial.
How many profiles were identified in primary school students?โผ
Three profiles: 'consistently low SB/high MVPA/long sleep', 'consistently high LPA', and 'consistently high SB/low PA/short sleep'. The first two had better mental health outcomes.
What was the association between movement profiles and mental health in secondary school students?โผ
Four profiles were identified. The profile with high MVPA and long sleep on weekdays and high MVPA on weekends had significantly lower depression and fewer internalized problems compared to the profile with high SB, low LPA, and short sleep.
What are the practical implications for mental health promotion?โผ
For primary school students, strategies should aim to increase MVPA, decrease SB, ensure adequate sleep, or maintain high LPA. For secondary school students, focus on ensuring adequate sleep and regular MVPA participation.
