Increased frequency of vigorous physical activity is associated with reduced difficulty falling asleep
In a cross-sectional analysis of 3960 participants from the Adventist Health Study-2, each unit increase in frequency of vigorous physical activity was associated with 3% lower odds of difficulty falling asleep (OR = 0.97; 95% CI = 0.94-0.98; P = 0.03). No significant association was found between vigorous activity and waking during the night.

- โ Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference
- โ Self-reported sleep and activity measures may introduce recall bias
- โ Sample limited to Adventist churchgoers, reducing generalizability
Frequently Asked Questions
Does vigorous exercise help with falling asleep faster?โผ
This study found that more frequent vigorous physical activity was associated with reduced difficulty falling asleep, with an odds ratio of 0.97 per unit increase in frequency.
Does vigorous exercise reduce nighttime awakenings?โผ
No, the study found no significant relationship between vigorous physical activity and waking during the night.
What population was studied in this research?โผ
The study included 3960 adults from the Adventist Health Study-2, predominantly White and Black churchgoers in North America, excluding those with chronic disease.
What were the main limitations of this study?โผ
Key limitations include its cross-sectional design (cannot prove causation), reliance on self-reported data, and a sample restricted to Adventist churchgoers, which may limit generalizability.
