Lumbar surgery improves sleep quality in patients with degenerative lumbar disease
This Bayesian meta-analysis of 25 studies (3,546 patients) found that lumbar surgery for degenerative lumbar disease was associated with a significant improvement in sleep quality (SMD -1.36; 95% CrI -2.02 to -0.71; posterior probability 99%). Pain, disability, and quality of life also improved significantly.

Limitations
- โ High heterogeneity in sleep quality outcomes was observed, partly explained by pathology and risk of bias
- โ Only studies published up to March 2026 were included, potentially missing recent or unpublished data
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does sleep quality improve after lumbar surgery?โผ
The meta-analysis found a large effect size (SMD -1.36) with a 99% posterior probability of improvement, indicating substantial sleep quality gains.
Does the type of lumbar surgery affect sleep outcomes?โผ
Meta-regression suggested that procedure type had limited influence on sleep improvement, while pathology and risk of bias contributed to heterogeneity.
Is sleep quality improvement linked to pain reduction?โผ
Yes, surgery significantly reduced both back pain (MD -3.73) and leg pain (MD -3.44), which likely contributes to better sleep.
What patient factors might influence sleep recovery after surgery?โผ
Age and study design had limited influence, but the specific degenerative pathology and study risk of bias were associated with variability in sleep outcomes.
