Meeting 24-hour movement behavior guidelines is associated with lower levels of adiposity in Portuguese children aged 6-10 years
In a cross-sectional study of 910 Portuguese children aged 6-10 years, meeting more 24-hour movement guidelines (MVPA ≥60 min/day, sleep 9-11 h/night, screen time ≤2 h/day) was associated with lower body mass index z-scores, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, and percentage body fat. Children meeting all three guidelines had significantly lower adiposity markers, with significant linear trends across the number of guidelines met (0, 1, 2, 3).

Limitations
- ⚠Cross-sectional design cannot establish causality
- ⚠Screen time was assessed by parental report, which may be subject to recall bias
- ⚠Sample limited to Portuguese children, limiting generalizability to other populations
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the 24-hour movement guidelines for children?▼
The guidelines are: moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) ≥60 minutes per day, sleep 9 to 11 hours per night, and screen time ≤2 hours per day.
How many children met all three guidelines in this study?▼
23% of the sample met all three guidelines, while 5.4% met none.
Which individual guideline was most strongly associated with lower adiposity?▼
Meeting the MVPA guideline was associated with lower percentage body fat, and meeting MVPA and sleep guidelines was associated with lower waist-to-height ratio.
Is this study causal?▼
No, this is a cross-sectional study, so it can only show associations, not cause and effect.
