Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with a significantly increased risk of periodontitis

This meta-analysis of 18 studies found that patients with obstructive sleep apnea have more than twice the odds of having periodontitis compared to those without OSA (OR = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.78-2.77). A moderate positive correlation was also found between OSA severity and periodontal disease severity (r = 0.39; 95% CI: 0.17-0.58).

Participants: N/A
Duration: N/A
Intervention: Presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as diagnosed by polysomnography or other methods
Outcome: Risk of periodontitis (odds ratio) and severity of periodontal disease (correlation coefficient)
Effect Size: OR = 2.22 (95% CI: 1.78-2.77); r = 0.39 (95% CI: 0.17-0.58)
Population: Human adults from observational studies (23 studies in qualitative synthesis, 18 in meta-analysis)

Mechanism Graph

OSA causes intermittent hypoxia and systemic inflammation

Inflammatory mediators promote periodontal tissue breakdown

Shared microbiological pathways may exacerbate both conditions

Result: Increased prevalence and severity of periodontitis in OSA patients

Limitations

  • โš Observational study designs preclude establishing causality
  • โš Moderate heterogeneity (Iยฒ = 57.4%) across included studies

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the strength of the association between OSA and periodontitis?โ–ผ

The meta-analysis found that OSA patients have 2.22 times higher odds of having periodontitis compared to those without OSA.

Does OSA severity correlate with periodontal disease severity?โ–ผ

Yes, a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.39) was found between OSA severity and periodontal disease severity.

Can this study prove that OSA causes periodontitis?โ–ผ

No, because all included studies were observational, causality cannot be established, though shared inflammatory pathways suggest a biologically plausible link.

What diagnostic methods were used for OSA in the included studies?โ–ผ

Studies used various methods, including polysomnography, and the findings were consistent across different diagnostic approaches.
