Progressive relaxation exercises administered via telenursing improve sleep quality in nursing students after an earthquake
A randomized controlled trial with 86 nursing students from two universities in eastern Turkey found that 20 minutes of nightly progressive relaxation exercises via video call for 4 weeks significantly improved sleep quality as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The post-test PSQI scores showed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (P < 0.005), while pre-test scores were not significantly different (P > 0.05).

Limitations
- โ The abstract does not report effect size or confidence intervals, limiting precision of the finding
- โ The study population is limited to nursing students in a specific post-earthquake context, reducing generalizability
- โ No blinding of participants or assessors is mentioned, which may introduce bias
Frequently Asked Questions
What is progressive relaxation exercises?โผ
Progressive relaxation exercises involve systematically tensing and relaxing different muscle groups to reduce physical tension and promote relaxation.
How was the intervention delivered?โผ
The intervention was delivered via telenursing, meaning a nurse conducted a video call with each student for 20 minutes every night over 4 weeks.
Who were the participants in this study?โผ
The study included 86 nursing students from two universities in eastern Turkey who were living in one of the 11 cities affected by the February 6 earthquake.
What was the main outcome measured?โผ
Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a validated self-report questionnaire.
