Supplements

Quercetin-curcumin co-supplementation reduces overall symptom burden, fatigue, and pain and improves physical health-related quality of life in adults with mild-to-moderate Long COVID.

In an open-label, single-arm exploratory study, 15 adults with Long COVID received a quercetin-curcumin supplement (65 mg quercetin and 42 mg curcumin per capsule, two capsules twice daily) for 8 weeks alongside standard care. Overall symptom burden decreased significantly from a median C19-YRS score of 50 to 32 (q=0.018), with significant reductions in fatigue (q=0.006) and pain severity/interference (q=0.006), and improved physical health-related QoL (SF-36 PCS, q=0.025).

Participants: N/A
Duration: 8 weeks
Intervention: Oral quercetin-curcumin co-supplementation (Nasafytolยฎ) providing 65 mg quercetin and 42 mg curcumin per capsule, administered as two capsules twice daily for 8 weeks.
Outcome: Overall symptom burden (C19-YRS), fatigue (FSS), pain (BPI-SF), cognitive function (PROMIS-CF-8a), mood (HADS), sleep quality (PSQI), autonomic symptoms (COMPASS-31), and health-related QoL (SF-36).
Effect Size: N/A (median change reported, not effect size)
Population: Adults with mild-to-moderate Long COVID (persistent symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection) in an outpatient real-life clinical practice setting.

Mechanism Graph

Quercetin and curcumin exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by modulating NF-ฮบB and Nrf2 pathways
โ†“
They may reduce chronic inflammation and oxidative stress implicated in Long COVID
โ†“
Potential senolytic properties may clear virus-induced senescent cells, reducing persistent immune activation

Result: Reduced symptom burden, fatigue, and pain, and improved physical QoL

Limitations

  • โš Uncontrolled single-arm open-label design, so observed changes may be due to natural recovery or placebo effects
  • โš Small sample size (n=15) limits generalizability and statistical power
  • โš No placebo control group, and results are exploratory and should be interpreted cautiously

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the recommended dose of quercetin-curcumin for Long COVID?โ–ผ

In this study, participants took two capsules twice daily, providing 260 mg quercetin and 168 mg curcumin per day for 8 weeks. However, this is not a recommendation; further trials are needed.

Does quercetin-curcumin improve sleep quality in Long COVID?โ–ผ

Sleep quality (PSQI) showed numerically favorable changes but did not reach statistical significance in this study.

Is quercetin-curcumin safe for Long COVID patients?โ–ผ

The supplement was generally well tolerated with no serious adverse events reported in this small study.

What are the main benefits of quercetin-curcumin in Long COVID?โ–ผ

The study found significant reductions in overall symptom burden, fatigue, and pain, and improved physical health-related quality of life after 8 weeks.
