Reallocating 30 minutes of sedentary behavior to sleep or physical activity is associated with reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms in Chinese adolescents, particularly among those with insufficient sleep.

In a cross-sectional study of 7,767 Chinese adolescents, replacing 30 minutes of sedentary behavior with sleep was associated with lower depression (B = -0.47) and anxiety (B = -0.31) scores. Replacing sedentary behavior with physical activity also reduced symptoms (depression B = -0.12, anxiety B = -0.07). Associations were stronger in adolescents with insufficient sleep.

Wu J, Gao Y, Chi X, Feng H, Yu Q, Chen Y, Qin J, Yang Y ยท Health and quality of life outcomes (2026)

Participants: N/A
Duration: Cross-sectional (single time point in 2023)
Intervention: Reallocating 30 minutes between physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep (isotemporal substitution model)
Outcome: Depressive symptoms (CES-D-10) and anxiety symptoms (GAD-7)
Effect Size: B = -0.47 (95% CI -0.53 to -0.41) for depression when replacing SB with sleep; B = -0.31 (95% CI -0.36 to -0.25) for anxiety
Population: 7,767 Chinese adolescents from Henan Province, Central China, in 2023

Mechanism Graph

Replacing sedentary behavior with sleep may improve emotional regulation and reduce stress.
โ†“
Replacing sedentary behavior with physical activity may increase endorphins and reduce anxiety.
โ†“
Insufficient sleep may heighten vulnerability to mood disturbances, making sleep reallocation more impactful.
โ†“
Result: Reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms.

Limitations

  • โš Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference.
  • โš Self-reported physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep may introduce recall bias.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is isotemporal substitution analysis?โ–ผ

It is a statistical method that estimates the effect of replacing time in one behavior (e.g., sedentary behavior) with an equal amount of time in another behavior (e.g., sleep) on an outcome, while keeping total time constant.

How much time reallocation was associated with mental health benefits?โ–ผ

Reallocating 30 minutes per day from sedentary behavior to sleep or physical activity was associated with lower depression and anxiety scores.

Did the associations differ by sleep status?โ–ผ

Yes, among adolescents with insufficient sleep, replacing sedentary behavior with sleep had stronger associations with reduced depression (B = -0.52) and anxiety (B = -0.40) compared to those with sufficient sleep.

What were the outcome measures used?โ–ผ

Depressive symptoms were measured using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10), and anxiety symptoms were measured with the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7).
