Replacing sedentary time or sleep with light physical activity is associated with lower perceived stress in older adults

In a cross-sectional study of 3,892 older adults (60+ years) from the 2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey, compositional analysis showed that the 24-hour movement behavior composition was significantly associated with perceived stress. Reallocating 30 minutes of sleep or sedentary behavior to light physical activity was associated with the largest decreases in perceived stress (ฮ” = -0.319 and -0.384, respectively; p < 0.001), with benefits starting at 5 minutes and increasing with duration.

Liang W, Ren K, Gao F ยท Geriatric nursing (New York, N.Y.) (2026)

Participants: N/A
Duration: N/A (cross-sectional)
Intervention: Reallocating 30 minutes of sleep or sedentary behavior to light physical activity (modeled via isotemporal substitution)
Outcome: Perceived stress measured by the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)
Effect Size: ฮ” = -0.319 (sleep to LPA) and ฮ” = -0.384 (SB to LPA) for 30-minute reallocation
Population: Older adults aged 60 years and above from the 2015 China Health and Nutrition Survey

Mechanism Graph

Compositional analysis of 24-hour movement behaviors (sleep, SB, LPA, MVPA)
โ†“
Higher proportions of MVPA, LPA, and SB linked to lower stress; higher sleep proportion linked to higher stress
โ†“
Isotemporal substitution models estimate effect of reallocating time from one behavior to another
โ†“
Replacing sleep or SB with LPA yields largest stress reduction

Limitations

  • โš Cross-sectional design, so causality cannot be established
  • โš Self-reported or device-based measurement of movement behaviors may have measurement error
  • โš Findings may not generalize beyond Chinese older adults

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main finding of this study?โ–ผ

Replacing sleep or sedentary time with light physical activity is associated with lower perceived stress in older adults, with benefits starting at 5 minutes and increasing with duration.

How much light physical activity is needed to reduce stress?โ–ผ

Even 5 minutes of light physical activity replacing sleep or sedentary time was associated with stress reduction, with larger reductions for 30 minutes.

Does replacing sleep with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity also help?โ–ผ

Yes, but the association was smaller compared to light physical activity.

What type of study is this?โ–ผ

This is a cross-sectional observational study using compositional data analysis and isotemporal substitution modeling.
