Satisfactory sleep quality is associated with a lower risk of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in Shanghai school students.

In a cross-sectional study of 5,026 students aged 9-15 in Shanghai, satisfactory sleep quality showed a protective association against screening-detected adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The IPW-adjusted estimated population prevalence of AIS was 3.8%, with 162 confirmed cases. Multivariable logistic regression identified sleep quality as one of several modifiable factors associated with AIS.

Participants: N/A
Duration: July 2024 to June 2025
Intervention: Assessment of sleep quality via questionnaire (satisfactory vs. unsatisfactory)
Outcome: Screening-detected adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) confirmed by radiography (Cobb angle โ‰ฅ10ยฐ)
Effect Size: N/A (odds ratio not explicitly reported in abstract)
Population: School students aged 9-15 years in Shanghai, China (n=5,026 from six schools in five districts)

Limitations

  • โš Cross-sectional design prevents establishing causality between sleep quality and AIS
  • โš Sleep quality was self-reported via questionnaire, which may introduce recall bias

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in this study?โ–ผ

The crude radiographically confirmed detection rate was 3.2% (162/5,026), and the IPW-adjusted estimated population prevalence was 3.8%.

How was sleep quality measured in this study?โ–ผ

Sleep quality was assessed through questionnaires completed by students, and categorized as satisfactory or unsatisfactory for analysis.

What other factors were associated with AIS in this study?โ–ผ

Female sex, improper sitting posture among girls, very low post-exercise fatigue among boys, and frequent one-sided exertion sports were associated with higher AIS risk, while higher BMI, balanced walking posture, and satisfactory sleep quality were protective.

Was the AI screening method accurate?โ–ผ

Yes, the AI-assisted structured-light screening showed high accuracy: IPW-adjusted sensitivity of 0.832, specificity of 0.995, PPV of 0.865, NPV of 0.993, and overall accuracy of 0.989.
