Virtual reality combined with biofeedback improves sleep quality and daytime function in patients with chronic insomnia

In a retrospective study of 83 patients with chronic insomnia, those receiving VR combined with biofeedback showed significantly greater improvements in PSQI and ISI scores compared to biofeedback alone (P < 0.01). Polysomnography revealed shortened sleep latency, prolonged total sleep time, and reduced awakenings (P < 0.05). Daytime function improved with decreased MFI fatigue scores and increased DFSS scores (P < 0.05), with no significant difference in adverse reactions at 1-month follow-up.

Result: Improved sleep quality and daytime function

Limitations

  • โš Retrospective design with potential selection bias
  • โš Single-center study with limited generalizability
  • โš No blinding or randomization, increasing risk of bias
  • โš Follow-up limited to 1 month, long-term effects unknown

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary benefit of adding VR to biofeedback for chronic insomnia?โ–ผ

The combination significantly improves sleep quality (PSQI, ISI) and daytime function (MFI, DFSS) compared to biofeedback alone.

Does VR combined with biofeedback affect polysomnography measures?โ–ผ

Yes, it shortens sleep latency, prolongs total sleep time, and reduces the number of awakenings.

Is VR combined with biofeedback safe?โ–ผ

The study found no significant difference in adverse reactions between groups at 1-month follow-up (P=0.071), suggesting it is safe.

What population was studied in this research?โ–ผ

Patients with chronic insomnia admitted to a hospital sleep department, with a total sample size of 83.
