Weekend recovery sleep does not fully compensate for the cardiometabolic effects of partial sleep restriction
In a randomized crossover trial of 10 healthy adults, 5 days of sleep restriction (reduced by 102 min/night) followed by 2 days of ad libitum recovery sleep led to worsened sleep quality, higher triglyceride levels, and higher blood pressure compared to adequate habitual sleep. These findings suggest that weekend recovery sleep fails to fully reverse the adverse metabolic and cardiovascular effects of weekday sleep restriction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does sleeping more on weekends undo the health damage from not sleeping enough during the week?โผ
This study suggests it does not fully compensate, as triglyceride levels and blood pressure remained higher even after two days of recovery sleep.
How much sleep was restricted in this study?โผ
Participants had their sleep reduced by 1 hour and 30 minutes per night for 5 weekdays, resulting in an average reduction of 102 minutes per night.
What cardiometabolic markers were measured?โผ
The study measured triglyceride levels and blood pressure as indicators of metabolic and cardiovascular risk.
Was sleep quality affected by the recovery sleep?โผ
Yes, sleep quality worsened after the recovery period, with increased wake after sleep onset and a higher number of awakenings.
